Every summer, the planters, hanging baskets and roadside displays across Downend and Bromley Heath keep their colour for months. There’s a small group of volunteers behind that, working under Downend and Bromley Heath Parish Council. We’re one of them.
Or more specifically, we do the watering.
What D&BH in Bloom actually is
Downend and Bromley Heath in Bloom is a community project that plants and maintains the flower displays across the parish. Planters at road junctions, hanging baskets on lamp posts, borders around community spaces, seasonal bulbs in spring. It’s volunteer-led. The parish council supports it, but the day-to-day is done by people who live locally and want the place to look better than it would otherwise.
The displays change through the year. Spring bulbs give way to summer bedding around May, then the summer colour runs through July before autumn takes over. Autumn and winter get a lighter touch, with pansies and evergreens holding things together until the next round of bulbs comes up.
How we got involved
We were already doing watering work in the area when the parish council approached us. They needed someone to take on the D&BH in Bloom watering, and by that point we knew the round, we had the kit, and we were in and out of Downend most weeks anyway on the window cleaning side. It made sense.
That was five summers ago. We’ve been doing it ever since.
How the watering actually works
Watering hanging baskets and planters in July is not a small job. Baskets in full sun dry out fast, and one dry week can undo a month of planting. The way we handle it is with 25-litre water barrels fitted to each display.
Every container we look after gets filled once a week. The barrel holds enough water to feed that display steadily for the following seven days, releasing gradually rather than all at once. That’s the difference between a display that limps through a hot week and one that still looks like something on the Friday.
The reservoir approach is why we can cover the whole round on a once-a-week rhythm rather than trying to chase every display with a hose in the middle of a heatwave. It’s slower to set up at the start of the season but much more reliable through the summer.
Why May to early August
We run the watering from May through to the start of August. That’s the window when the summer bedding is planted, established, and thirsty. Before May the spring displays are still going and the weather does most of the work. From mid-August onwards the rain tends to come back in enough to keep things ticking, and the summer bedding is on its way out anyway.
Three months of consistent weekly watering is what carries the displays through the driest, hottest part of the year. Miss a week in July and you can see it in the baskets by the following Monday.
Why we keep doing it
There isn’t a grand answer to this. Places that look cared for tend to feel cared for, and that has a knock-on effect. People stop and look. They notice. It costs the parish very little to run because it’s volunteer-led, and it makes the daily walk to the shops or the school run measurably nicer for a few thousand people.
Fifth year in, we know most of the displays by memory. Which ones catch the sun hardest. Which ones the wind gets to. Which junctions the summer bedding really lifts. It’s an easy thing to be quietly proud of.

If you live in Downend or Bromley Heath and you’ve got a spare hour or two through the summer, D&BH in Bloom is always looking for more volunteers. It doesn’t need to be watering. There’s planting, deadheading, general upkeep, and help with the seasonal changeovers.
